Today was supposed to be our first full day of school, but unfortunately it didn't go anything like I had planned! We lost power last night around dinner time due to the hurricane like winds we had been experiencing all day. I was hoping and praying that by the time we got up this morning all would be restored. No such luck! So, after we had a quick lesson on how much we depend on electricity these days, we headed into town...to meet up with good ol' Mr. E-lectricity!

After we got home, and thankfully the power had been turned back on, we hit the books. The kids weren't to thrilled about doing school work after being out all day, but they want to go to the first night of CLC (church) tonight so I had a little leverage on them!

First we learned a little more about Maps and Globes. Globes are exact replicas of the earth, where as maps really distort the size and shape of the land. The girls did a little experiment with an orange to show this concept. They had to draw (as best they could) the outline of all the continents.
(See our tray of candles from last night???)

Then we peeled (I mean, I peeled...in the roughest sense of the word) the orange to lay it flat like a map showing that when this is done the continents are distorted.
Okay...so it isn't our best work, but they got the idea!
After that we finished up the rest of our work for the day except for science...it's dinner time now so that will just have to wait until tomorrow. Despite the delay in our day I would say it was an over all success!
